225 Välkommen till Sverige - Migration & asylum in Sweden a Nordic Horizons event with Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director of the Swedish Migration Agency

With Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director of the Swedish Migration Agency. In 2015 more than 163,000 asylum seekers arrived in Sweden, more per capita than in any other European country, including Germany. The sharp increase in the number of people fleeing Syria and other war-torn countries was labeled a 'migrant crisis' in Europe. How did Sweden deal with the issue? What lessons can be learned? Even before the recent Syrian crisis Sweden was already one of Europe’s most welcoming countries to refugees. But the country has found it dificult to integrate newcomers and find jobs for refugees and asylum seekers with little grasp of the Swedish language. Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director of the Swedish Migration Agency, explains why Sweden has become the Nordic nation with the most open attitude to migrants and refugees and shares his experience in managing the recent surge in migration applications.

Our Democracy

Our Democracy

7.00pm Mon 21 Nov 2016
Act As If We Own The Place campaign launch.

643 Our Democracy Act As If We Own The Place campaign launch.

Our Democracy - Act As If We Own The Place is a coalition of organisations, campaigners and politicians who are dedicated to improving our local democracy. The campaign arises from a simple idea: that human beings flourish when they have control over their own lives. We think communities can redesign their local democracy to work better for them, thriving all the more by taking control of their community’s future. To celebrate the launch of the camapign, join us for a public discussion on renewing local democracy featuring: LESLEY RIDDOCH, author of Blossom: What Scotland needs to flourish ROBIN MCALPINE, director of think-tank Common Weal GEHAN MACLEOD, co-founder of GalGael Trust and former resident of Pollok Free State WILLIE SULLIVAN, director of the Electoral Reform Society Scotland At the moment most of us have things done to us; power exercised over us by the government, by the council, or by companies who don’t work with our community interests at their core. This disempowers and patronises us. If democracy is about anything it is about us running our own affairs. That is why we are asking you to ‘act as if you own the place’ - if the citizens of a village, town, city or country don’t own it, then who does? At the launch we will announce a series of Scotland-wide events where local people can gather together to talk about how they want to run that local place. More information about this will be available shortly. There has never been a more exciting time to get involved in the campaign for a better local democracy. Moreover, there has never been a time when it has been more needed. Our democracy isn’t working in the way it should. To renew and extend the control we have in our communities, it needs a shot in the arm from you and your friends and networks. The event is free but so we have an idea of numbers, please reserve tickets using the ticketing link. Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/283940438668537/

What changed for former Labour spin doctor, Simon Pia, to come out in favour of a Yes vote? In our series of talks from previously high profile 'no' voters we are delighted to have Simon come to the hub to speak on matters close to his heart. The former journalist and now media commentator has been frank in hos ascertions about Scottish politics, the Labour party and the best path for Scotland. If we are to win #indyref2 we must engage with the NO voters who are curious and swithering. A point of difference this time around will be to hear from those who have changed opinion since 2014. Oppose the Nazi White Pride March in Edinburgh - Nae Nazis! Unite Against Fascism call on people to stand with them to oppose National front / White Pride

It is with disgust that we announce that the poisonous, travelling nazi rump called the National Front intend to come to Edinburgh city centre on the 25th of March to hold a ‘White Pride March’. The National Front are a pale shadow of that they were in the 1970s, when they achieved 100,000s of votes in elections and represented a real threat to black, Asian and other minorities on the streets. Because of constant and united work by the Anti-Nazi League, UAF and other anti-fascists over the last few decades, this tiny rump of fascists do not represent the threat that they once did. However, emboldened by election events in Austria, by nazi Le Pen’s polling in France, by Islamophobic Geert Wilders’ polling in the Netherlands and by the influence of white nationalists in Donald Trump’s team these fascists feel confident they can come to the streets of our multicultural city. These fascists look across parts of Europe and want to emulate fascist Jobbik in Hungary or Golden Dawn in Greece. Edinburgh has a fine tradition of stopping racists and Nazis. Should the nazi National Front decided to step foot in Edinburgh, we call upon all anti-racists and anti-fascists to take part in the broadest united mobilisation. UAF Scotland has a long history of countering and ensuring that fascists do not get a toe-hold in our communities. Only recently, anti-fascists ensured that the nazi Blood and Honour gig was cancelled in Scotland due to mass opposition. We won’t stand for their racism, their Islamophobia, their scapegoating of migrants and refugees. We will push them back like we did with the SDL, the EDL and the BNP. Please share this event with your friends, family, work mates. Assemble 12.45pm, Waverley Train Station (Market St entrance)

Scottish Independence Convention Presents The Reassembly Elaine C Smith will be hosting the many guests from across the country and the movement... and we will then be able to get down to some serious discussion about the way ahead...

Exactly two years on from the referendum, The Scottish Independence Convention are having a social event for all interested Indy groups to launch the next phase... to bring us all together, encourage dialogue, listen to some speeches, poetry, comedy and enjoy some music. We need all that energy, artistic endeavour, hard work and good old political discussion to get started again ( though it has never really gone away) and we need to establish a gathering place for all the groups, individuals, artists and ideas that made the Yes movement so vital in the journey towards self determination and Independence. Elaine C Smith will be hosting the many guests from across the country and the movement... and we will then be able to get down to some serious discussion about the way ahead.

The YES Movement A non party afiliated rally for Scottish Independence

The Yes Movement Rally on the 18th of September 2016, this is being held at Glasgow Green from 12pm until 8pm. This is going to be a day to remember. Why come? Why Volunteer? I would like to tell thee. Have any of you ever felt like you were here, to do something great with your life? Well you are and this is why we are all here. We are here to change the world. It is no easy task, but to us it is clear that the task is ours. That is why they called us the Bravest in all the stories. We will show the world there is another way to live, that social and cultural change is inevitable and that a new way of doing things is being birthed. A great human being once said 'Be the change you wish to see in the world'. For too long we have been realising that the entire system is corrupt. We have waited for those in power to change things, For someone to stand up and do what's right. None of them have, not really. We are creating this Movement together. As Humanity we can free ourselves from this system that none of us agreed to when we were born here, by taking our power back and in doing that, we show others how to free themselves from the Elitist system. To put it bluntly, the days of working to pay bills and die are over. We want more for ourselves and the generations to come. We stand for Equality, Contributing and Pioneering our own future. There are new way's to do things now and we all know that, we must venture into the unknown and discover 'HOW?' together. Please email [email protected] Your expertise as a wonderful human being is required if you are a First Aider, Stage Hand, Steward, Chaperone or you would like to set up a stall for the day. Please also feel free to contact us if you have any suggestions/ ideas, or if you would like to help us in anyway. All contributions are most welcomed. The system we live under is broken, we're not fixing it. We want to create a new one. Go bravely friends. We are the change bringers. Please Share this message, We look forward to hearing from you.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
