Iain Macwhirter will be joining us at 3pm, 31st Jan 2017 to talk about his recent article: Lord Supreme are not another Parcel o’ Rogues. They’ve done Scots a favour rejecting veto on A50 (link below). In his article he highlights the implications of the recent Lords’ ruling regarding the Scottish Parliament’s relationship to Westminster and the Brexit process. Macwhirter suggests: "So are the Lords Supreme just another Parcel o’ Rogues? Not at all. Scotland should thank their Lordships for making crystal clear what many suspected: namely that the Sewel Convention, under which Westminster supposedly refrains from ruling on devolved issues without the consent of the Scottish Parliament, is froth, mince, tripe, baloney and codswallop. It has no legal force. The clause in the 2016 Scotland Act, which supposedly placed Sewel on a “statutory footing”, was just there to fool the natives into thinking their Parliament”s powers were “entrenched” and irreversible. Holyrood’s legislative powers are clearly and explicitly on loan from Westminster and liable to be over-ridden as and when the UK Government chooses." 20 YEARS OF GALGAEL - MON 24 JULY - 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - CCA, Sauchiehall Street SPEAKERS: Sir Harry Burns, John Carnochan, Karyn McClusky, our own Alastair McIntosh Contributions from our volunteers, participants, bambassadors. Short film of our long agos by Tom Wall. It’s kinda hard to believe that we’ve been around for 20 years now. Well, officially at least! Unofficially we’ve been around even longer, which is perhaps a whole other story. We hope you can join us for a bit of a gathering as we reflect on the last 20 years and hear from brainy folk how they would describe the contribution GalGael’s work makes today. Govan, Scotland and the world have changed since we started out and not being ones for resting on our laurels, we’ll also look to the next 20 years and the potential of GalGael to meet new challenges. We’d particularly love the event to bring together those who’ve been part of getting us to where we are now, participants from our programmes - past and present and those who could be part of supporting what we’re yet to become. We also want to share with you our Charter - the outcome of a truly collaborative process to get really clear about what matters to us and why. The Charter will help us hold fast to what makes us GalGael as we cross this threshold in to the next twenty years. We can’t wait to see what you think and invite you to join us in sharing some hopes for the future. There’s limited space so please RSVP by getting a free Eventbrite ticket by clicking the link above.

280 Housekeeping Scotland Convention: A vision for homes, communities & places The Housekeeping Scotland Convention is the start of a long term Common Weal project aiming to build a genuinely transformative agenda for housing in Scotland that re-establishes homes as the beating heart of communities and places, not as financial...

#HKS17 Houses are not just walls with price tags. Houses are homes, which are the centre of communities, and it is communities which form places. The Housekeeping Scotland Convention is the start of a long term Common Weal project aiming to build a genuinely transformative agenda for housing in Scotland that re-establishes homes as the beating heart of communities and places, not as financial assets for speculative gains. This project therefore seeks to address the two facets of the housing crisis, equally pervasive: an economic one, with sky-high rents and ever-rising inequality between those with property and those without, and an alienation one, with new housing built without community in mind and the forces of gentrification and under-investment displacing and undermining communities within our built environment. This twin crisis fused together in the tragedy of Grenfell tower, which if it does not act as a spur to fundamentally change our approach to homes, communities and places nothing will. The aim is to have good housing with the infrastructure and public amenities that make good communities – then we can give people great homes and great communities in which to make a home. Speakers: Professor Mike Danson (Heriot-Watt University) Janet Fenton (Scottish CND) Brendan O'Hara (MP Argyll & Bute) Lesley Riddoch (Journalist & Broadcaster) Chair: Alannah Maurer (Navy Not Nuclear) It is argued that the removal of Trident from the Faslane Naval Base would be gravely detrimental to the local economy and to the wellbeing of surrounding local communities. This is a message of stagnation and despair, calculated to frighten people into accepting the presence of weapons of mass destruction on their very doorsteps. Our Conference intends to show that the removal of nuclear weapons from Faslane would be the making of this area, in terms of: • the necessary decommissioning and decontamination post nuclear • the establishment of Scotland's own conventional defence force HQ • the freeing up of the Clyde estuary for alternative usages currently proscribed by the presence of nuclear • the range of less tangible rewards and benefits accruing to us with the removal of nuclear weapons from our soil and from our waters Research shows that given adequate advance planning, sufficient resources and strong political direction, conversion away from defence employment can result in long term net benefits to local economies with minimal transitional unemployment. (‘Trident & Jobs’, STUC/SCND). We can provide all of these in spades, particularly when we would no longer have to pay out our share of the £200 billion plus that is the true cost of the Trident successor. In the words of the redoubtable Elaine C Smith: "Scotland deserves a better script - let's start writing it!" (National 14/1/2017) Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1849990571882459/

Another installment from the year long series. UPDATE: livestream to be confirmed.

260 Universal Basic Income - Join the Movement! Another installment from the year long series. UPDATE: livestream to be confirmed.

The fourth event in a Year long campaign, exploring Universal Basic Income in Glasgow This month we are Launching a Movement, It has become apparent during the course of these events that UBI has become seriously considered by Councils in Scotland for a Pilot to be tested in one or two of scotlands major cities so we are shifting temporarily from an open exploration of the concept with a variety of different speakers and performers, to a more educational focused string of events This month will be featuing Counciler Matt Kerr who is championing UBI as a Policy in Glasgow and Fife and open to engaging with the public to learn about the Main issues and concerns that you, the attendee's, raise during the workshops Ellie Harrison ( Artist behind " The Glasgow Effect" ) will be along to do a talk and get involved in the Q&A workshops The movement? We will be actively launching our own independent surge of energy towards getting Universal Basic Income more out there into the zietgiest as it already is, working closely with existing organisations and particularly with the artistic community in Glasgow as a force for change. Starting to expand into an online campaign, door to door / street canvassers and making the workshops mobile, bringing our resources to all different area's of Glasgow to collect information on what people are saying about basic income. Its all with a pinch of salt, and its nothing original but we want to dive into this as it is an exciting time for UBI and we all want to get involved. Come introduce yourself at the event!!! If you are an artist or a speaker who would be interested in performing or bringing something to the event, get in touch with Johnny cypher on facebook or here at [email protected] Thanks, more details as we confirm them!

Catalan Defence Committee 21D rally at Holyrood a rally standing in solidarity with the democratic process in Catalonia

The Catalan Defence Committee (Scotland) are calling a rally at the Scottish Parliament to stand in solidarity with the people of Catalonia on the day of the vital election taking place there. The intimidation and the brutal repression against the right to Catalan self determination is now entering a new phase, with the Spanish state strangling Catalan civil society and even announcing that they will ban international observers at the election. It is vital that all democrats come together to say that the world is watching.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

Red Road Flats Demolition RED ALERT DANGER DANGER Covering the controversial demolition of the Red Road Flats

ALSO here for protesters live stream within the danger zone http://livestre.am/5dlJI Highly contentious issue with many locals against the blowing up of these 6 flats at once and want them brought down floor by floor. The flats could still contain asbestos; they are very close to residential areas including a nursery and there is worry about water and gas pipes being burst. See WikiPedia link for more info and criticism of previous Red Row flats that have been blown up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Road_Flats

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
