50Divestment Film Night - with Common Weal, Fossil Free Strathclyde & Friends

Gilmorehill Centre (Andrew Stewart Cinema), 9 University Avenue, Glasgow G12 8QQ Hosted by: The Common Weal - a vision for a better Scotland, Fossil Free Strathclyde and Friends of the Earth Scotland. Please reserve your place at: https://divest-glasgow-film-night.eventbrite.co.uk/ Using poetry, journalism and art, a series of beautiful and inspiring short films will explore Scotland’s oil industry, the challenge of climate change, and what can be gained from fighting for environmental justice. Glasgow Council invests £890 million in fossil fuels. Instead we need investment in projects that are environmentally and socially just, and with local elections in early May now’s the perfect time to demand this change. After the films you can join us for tea and coffee, and we’ll will help you email and tweet your Council election candidates about going fossil free. The cinema venue has step-free access via a side door. Please email [email protected] to notify us if you will need assistance. We apologise that we cannot confirm step-free access to venue where tea and coffee will take place. This event forms part of the Global Divestment Mobilisation. Scrap the Rape Clause

231Protest Scrap the Rape Clause

PROTEST: Scotland stands against the Family Cap and Rape Clause Today at 18:00–18:45 George Square, (Freedom Square) Glasgow, G1 3, United Kingdom There has been incredible and united anger against the Family Cap and Rape Clause in Scotland; one week on, we’re gathering to tell the DWP that our strong opposition is not going anywhere. On the 6th of April the Family Cap came into force, limiting Child Tax Credits to just two children unless a woman can prove that the third or subsequent child was born of rape. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) wanted women’s organisations to participate, and act as third party verifiers. In an unprecedented move, both Rape Crisis Scotland and Scottish Women’s Aid have refused. Despite having no-one to actually implement it in Scotland, the DWP pressed ahead UK wide, and we now have a policy that could make women choose between poverty and disclosing - possibly for the first time ever - that they were raped. Both the Family Cap and Rape Clause are cruel policies that will push women and their children into poverty. Life is unpredictable – people die, people leave, people lose their jobs - welfare is supposed to be a safety net that catches those who need it. Limiting welfare to two children is nothing but an attack on the poor. We stand against the Family Cap and the Rape Clause, and we’re not giving up. *We want to make sure that this protest is accessible. George Sq is wheelchair accessible and the protest will be static. Volunteer stewards will be on hand and we will strive to make sure that seating is prioritised for those who need it. Please get in touch (details below) if there is more that we can do to make sure everyone can attend.* The protest will be live streamed for those who cannot attend - details to follow.
